Nine projects worth studying.

A shortlist reviewed from Legal OSS and the primary repositories. Each is a candidate for a teaching example or exercise — described honestly, with its licence and its limits.

Not endorsements. Listing shows teaching relevance, not regulatory suitability or production readiness.

Not installed or audited. Nothing here runs on this site, and no project has been security-tested against the lawv stack.

Honest status. Each entry shows whether it is reference material, a candidate, or a prepared exercise.

01

noslegal taxonomy

Apache-2.0Teaching candidate

What it is

Shared legal classification facets for matters and work types.

Proposed exercise

Map a small subset of facets to a fictional firm vocabulary.

Classroom boundary

A taxonomy alone is not a complete matter ontology; it needs explicit mapping into the SurrealDB schema.

02

docassemble

MITTeaching candidate

What it is

Guided interviews and automated document assembly.

Proposed exercise

Design a short client intake interview that assembles a first draft.

Classroom boundary

Separate Python/YAML runtime; outputs need legal review for England and Wales.

03

ContextGem

Apache-2.0Teaching candidate

What it is

Structured extraction from documents with source references.

Proposed exercise

Extract defined fields from a fictional contract and keep the cited passage.

Classroom boundary

Needs a dedicated Bedrock adapter; not assumed compatible out of the box.

04

uk-legal-mcp

MITTeaching candidate

What it is

Read-only UK statute and citation retrieval over the Model Context Protocol.

Proposed exercise

Demonstrate one read-only connector and a denied tool call.

Classroom boundary

Third-party connector; tool calls through Bedrock need server-side contract enforcement.

05

DocuSeal

AGPL-3.0Teaching candidate

What it is

Document execution and signing.

Proposed exercise

Record a signing event against a fictional matter.

Classroom boundary

Check AGPL obligations and Pro feature limits before any private deployment.

06

Harvey LAB

MITTeaching candidate

What it is

Evaluation harnesses, task rubrics and verification patterns.

Proposed exercise

Compare a workflow against a baseline and an answer set.

Classroom boundary

General benchmark scores do not equal regulatory compliance.

07

MoJ CLA Backend

MITReference only

What it is

Backend for Civil Legal Advice: cases, users, assignments and eligibility.

Proposed exercise

Study operational records, roles and triage rules as a UK case study.

Classroom boundary

Architectural reference only; not a ready-made private practice system.

08

stella

Apache-2.0Reference only

What it is

Legal workspace for matter overview and document review.

Proposed exercise

Comparative UX study of matter and review screens.

Classroom boundary

Beta software; a comparison study, not part of the LAWV core stack.

09

LegalMemory

AGPL-3.0Reference only

What it is

Permission-aware knowledge graph with versioned retrieval.

Proposed exercise

Advanced discussion of permissions and versioning in firm knowledge.

Classroom boundary

Discussion material; does not replace the LAWV SurrealDB graph.
