Knowledge first, then the model

Why a law firm's vocabulary matters more than its choice of AI model.

Most legal AI projects begin with a chatbot and a hope. The chatbot is impressive for a week, then it says something confidently wrong about a matter, and trust evaporates.

Good firms already know the answer. They start with vocabulary: the words a practice uses, what each one means, and how they relate. Only once that is written down does it make sense to let a model retrieve from it.

In practice that means a controlled list of terms, a simple taxonomy, and a matter record that links facts to their sources. It is unglamorous work. It is also the part you own, whichever model you use next year.
